Eye clinic in Bouar

The eye center has been in working since March 2019. Until now, no similar workplace has been available in the entire Nana Mambéré prefecture in the North West of the CAR. For people with eye defects, the only treatment option was in the capital, Bangui, 400 km away. For patients and their families, this meant high costs of treatment and the purchase of medicines, but also expensive transport and accommodation. Thanks to this eye center, everything is easier for many people. The consultation is conducted by a retired ophthalmologist who worked with a team from Germany for years. Since 2019, more as 5400 consultations have been done. In 2020, a total of 723 interventions were performed at the center.

In 2024, the operation of the eye center was suspended – the ophthalmologist no longer practices due to advanced age. The project will continue immediately after the center manages to find a new doctor. There is a great shortage of them in the Central African Republic. We are trying to change this, among other things, by supporting university students.

The operation of the eye center is suspended in 2024.
